TV나 영화에서는 3D가 화두입니다.
3D TV 시대를 선도하기 위해서 벌써부터 방송 일각에선 3D 드라마에 대한 이야기가 심심치 않게 회자되고 있다고 합니다.
영화에선 아바타 3D IMAX에 대한 이야기가 단연 화두입니다.
하지만 이러한 논의의 저변엔 HD가 깔려 있습니다.
이미 HDTV의 보급율은 60%를 넘어서, Full HD 시대로 넘어가고 있습니다.
Full HD는 1080P 규격입니다.
즉 해상도가 1920 X 1080입니다.
일반적으로 논의되는 HD는 720P입니다.
1280 X 720입니다.
비디오의 화질은 해상도와 함께 비트레이트가 언급됩니다.
HDTV를 전파로 전송하는 화질은 약 40Mbps입니다.
즉 초당 40Mega Bits를 전송합니다.
디지털TV가 2012년 도입될 예정이어서 요즘 방송국은 HD와 함께 디지털라이징에 대한 준비가 거의 마무리되어 가는 것 같습니다.
HD 카메라로 촬영하는 것이 대세를 이루고 있어서 점점 더 많은 콘텐츠를 HD로 시청할 수 있습니다.
지상파를 제외하고는 케이블TV에서는 디지털케이블TV는 10~12Mbps정도로 서비스되고 있으며, IPTV는 8~10Mbps 정도로 서비스되고 있다 합니다.
아쉽게도 MOV파일이어서 퀵타임무비플레이어로 감상해야 합니다.
사용자들에게 또다시 무언가를 설치할 것을 요구합니다.
스트리밍 서비스에서는 아직까지는 거의 대부분이 720P 2Mbps가 대세인 형국입니다.
그 이상의 화질을 제공하기에는 서비스 사업자의 입장에서 2가지의 문제가 존재하기 때문입니다.
첫째는 2Mbps 이상의 화질을 제공하려면 높은 망비용을 감당할 수 있어야 합니다.
두번째는 망비용을 감당하더라도 막상 고화질 영상을 스트리밍했을 때, 사용자 PC의 스펙이 낮은 경우에도 서비스가 가능하도록 기술적 조치가 가능해야 합니다.
현재 이러한 수준을 거의 완벽하게 대응할 수 있는 서비스는 판도라TV의 4HD뿐입니다.
판도라TV는 이미 랩서비스를 통해서 4Mbps급 720P 서비스를 테스트해왔으며, 이미 지난달 부터는 판도라TV 홈의 TV-BOX를 통해서 4Mbps 콘텐츠를 일 300만 방문자에게 과감하게 제공하고 있습니다.
이러한 과감한 시도가 가능해진 것은 판도라TV의 BitrateThrottling에 대한 자신감 때문입니다.
비트레이트 스로틀링은 비트레이트를 조절하는 기술입니다.
이론적으로는 간단합니다.
비디오 서비스 관점에서 사용자 환경은 크게 PC 스펙과 망대역폭이라는 2가지 요소를 가지고 있습니다.
100Mbps광랜 이용자라 할지라도 PC 성능이 낮으면 고화질 영상을 재생하지 못하고 화면이 끊기는 현상이 자주 발생하여 사실상 HD 시청이 불가능해집니다.
그런데 판도라TV의 비트레이트스로틀링은 저사양 PC가 다운로드에 사용하는 리소스를 최소화하도록 다운로드되는 파일을 꼭 필요한 만큼으로 제한하여 내려줍니다.
그렇기에 CPU점유율이 낮아지고, 결국 고화질 영상의 재생 가능성이 다른 서비스에 비하여 월등하게 높아졌습니다.
이러한 자신감이 결국 일 300만 방문자를 대상으로 4Mbps HD를 메인에 직접 게재하여 서비스하는 것으로 귀결됩니다.
아직까지는 대외적으로 그러한 4HD의 공격적인 실험에 대해서 릴리즈하지 않고 있으나, 현재까지의 실험 결과로는 상당히 훌륭하게 네트웍 부하를 소화해내고 있습니다.
4HD 서비스를 직접 경험해 본 사용자들 중 상당수가 이 정도면 돈내고 볼만하다는 답글을 많이 써 주셨습니다.
조만간 그와 같은 세상이 실현될 것으로 전망합니다.
저작권법이 강화되고, 점차 불법 유통이 사라지고는 있으나 아직까지는 완벽히 사라지지 못하고 있습니다.
제가 보기엔 최신 영화나 드라마에 대한 니즈가 아직도 강하기 때문인 듯 합니다.
극장에 갈 시간적 여유가 없는 사람들은 여전히 현재 개봉중이거나 심지어는 미개봉작의 파일을 웹하드에서 검색하고 있고, 그러한 영화 파일들이 버젓이 유통되고 있습니다.
이러한 불법 파일이 유통되는 것은 다른 어떤 콘텐츠보다 그러한 콘텐츠에 대한 수요가 높다는 것을 반증하는 것이기도 합니다.
그런만큼, 머지 않아 초고화질로 재생되는 영화가 온라인과 극장에서 동시개봉하는 것이 일반적인 현상이 될 수 있으며, TV드라마 등의 프로그램이 TV보다 오히려 인터넷에서 먼저 제공되는 역설적인 Time Hold Back이 가능해질 수도 있을 것입니다.
실제 Hulu.com에선 이미 오래전부터 프리즌브레이크를 TV보다 먼저 서비스해왔습니다.
지금까지의 온라인 비디오 서비스는 결국 망사업자의 배만 불려오는 미련한 서비스였을지도 모릅니다.
열심히 광고나 유료화로 돈을 벌어서 ISP 사업자에게 비싼 대가를 지불해서 ISP 사업자들이 앉아서 돈을 버는 구조를 가져왔습니다.
그러나 점차 CDN 기술이 발전하거나 범용화되는 추세이므로, 결국에는 비디오 서비스를 제공하는 플랫폼 사업자의 경쟁력에 따라서, 더욱 고화질의 콘텐츠를 보다 저렴한 비용으로 서비스하는 것도 불가능하지는 않을 것입니다.
또한 반드시 그렇게 되어야만이 비디오 서비스 시장 전체가 활성화될 수 있을 것입니다.

등등이 주요 이슈가 될 것입니다.
아울러 수익모델 관점에서는
- FOD(Free VOD) 기반의 광고 모델의 심화/발전을 위하여 초고화질 광고/초대형 광고 등이 이슈가 될 것이며
- 유료 모델에선 다운로드 결제 사업과
- 온라인 스트리밍 결제된 콘텐츠를 모바일에서 그대로 이용가능한 모바일 컨버전스
등이 주요한 이슈가 될 것입니다.
판도라TV는 이와 같은 온라인 비디오 서비스의 차세대 플랫폼에서의 경쟁우위를 위하여
이미 모바일 관련 개발이 진행중이고
초고하질은 4HD가 준비되어 있으며
라이브 역시 이미 HD Live를 준비해 둔 상태입니다.
수익모델 측면에선
엣티비라는 디지털콘텐츠 오픈마켓 플레이스가 구축되어 있어서 스트리밍/다운로드의 유료화가 가능하며, 채널별 월정액 방식의 구독모델도 구현되어 있습니다.
이젠 엣티비 플랫폼을 타 사이트에 이식하여 콘텐츠 판매를 활성화하는 작업이 예정되어 있습니다.
2009년은 광고 경기 침체와 더불어, 엠엔캐스트 등 마이너 비디오 사이트의 파산으로 시장 전체가 위축되는 느낌을 주었으나, 2010년은 비디오 서비스 시장이 1차 정리되면서 사실상 본 게임으로 접어들어 마이너 리그가 아닌 메이저 리그가 되는 양상입니다.
그 와중에 국내 서비스 사업자들은 모두 국내 방송사와 합의하여 저작물의 합법적 유통과 보호를 위해 노력하고 있으나, 한국에 진출한 구글코리아가 있음에도 유튜브닷컴은 불법 콘텐츨 여전히 유통하고 있어서, 방송3사 등의 저작권자로부터 빈축을 사고 있는 실정입니다.
그런데 이와 같은 상황에서 상당수 네티즌이 제한적 본인확인제의 여파로 유튜브로의 망명을 시도한 것은 여러가지로 시사하는 바가 있습니다.
인터넷 이용자들에게는 국가도 민족도 중요하지 않고, 자신의 철학이나 이익을 위해선 자국 서비스를 과감히 내 던지기도 한다는 이중성입니다.
네티즌의 상당수는 독도를 지키는 반크와 같이 적극적으로 권리를 주장하는 경우가 있으나, 또한 상당수의 네티즌은 불법적인 콘텐츠를 찾아서 웹하드나 해외 사이트를 기웃거리기도 합니다.
그래서 제가 같이 일했던 법무 담당자는 '네티즌은 윤리적이지는 않으나 합리적이다'라는 말을 했던 모양입니다.
즉, 합법인지 불법인지를 따지지 않으니 비윤리적이고, 가격이 싼 곳을 찾아서 공급을 받으니 합리적이란 뜻입니다.
이미 상당수의 비디오 서비스를 하는 포털들이 과도한 누적 적자에 허덕이고 있습니다.
이 와중에서 거의 유일하게 자체적인 망기술을 개발하고, 캐쉬서버를 직접 컨트롤하여 한층 더 화질을 높이고 안정적인 재생을 가능하게 하는 4HD 서비스를 하는 곳은 전세계적으로 판도라TV가 유일합니다.
2010년 판도라TV의 변화에 주목할 이유가 바로 거기에 있습니다.

국내 비디오 사이트 중에 HD를 그대로 업로드할 수 있는 곳은 제가 알기론 판도라TV 뿐입니다.
이 확장자는 그대로는 판도라tv에 업로드되지 않으므로, 확장자를 mov로 변경해주어야 합니다.
그렇게 하면 야후 무비에 있는 초고화질 HD 트레일러를 판도라TV에 업로드할 수 있습니다.
판도라TV HD 규격은 720P이므로 해상도의 가로가 1280이상이어야만 HD로 인코딩 됩니다.
참고로 1080P는 1920 X 1080 사이즈의 HD 규격을 말합니다.
720P는 1280 X 720 규격입니다.
